Perfect gloss starts with the right products.

A high-quality body repair does not end with painting. The true result is revealed during the polishing process. Polishing is a surface treatment process that levels the paintwork by removing a microscopic layer of clear coat to eliminate scratches and other defects. It restores gloss, depth, and smoothness to the surface. To achieve this, the correct selection of materials is crucial – from polishing pads and compounds to professional polishing tools.

Choosing the right polishing tool.

Before starting the polishing process, it is important to select the appropriate tool. Today, the market offers a wide range of polishing machines with different backing plate sizes, but the key distinction lies in the type of motion – rotary or dual action.

A rotary polisher rotates only on its own axis and has no additional movement. Therefore, if held in one spot for too long, it can quickly generate heat and burn through the clear coat. This type of tool is recommended for removing deep scratches and major defects, as it is considered more aggressive and allows faster correction.

A dual action (DA) polisher rotates on its axis while also performing an orbital movement – typically 15 mm or 21 mm. As a result, it generates less heat on the surface. This makes it an ideal choice for freshly painted vehicles or for refining the finish after heavy defect removal. With a DA polisher, there is minimal risk of overheating the surface or creating new defects.

Removal of deep defects.

If sanding marks, scratches, or unevenness are visible in the clear coat, an effective correction is required. RUPES XC2 compound has proven to be an excellent solution – a high-performance coarse compound designed for the fast removal of deep scratches, sanding marks, and other defects.

When combined with suitable polishing pads – foam or wool – it provides: • fast defect removal
• a stable working process
• minimal dust generation

This makes it an ideal solution for professional workshops where both speed and quality are essential.

Creating the final gloss.

After removing deep scratches, sanding marks, and other defects, the next stage ensures a perfect final result. RUPES DA Ultra Fine compound has proven to be highly effective – a finishing polish that removes holograms, light haze, and minor imperfections that may remain after using a coarse compound and wool pad, while delivering a deep, uniform gloss.

As alternatives to RUPES DA Ultra Fine, which also provide excellent finishing results:

• 3M Perfect-It III Fine Polishing Compound – a reliable solution for professional paint finishing with a high gloss level;
• CARTEC Fine Cut 9000 – perfectly suited for the final polishing step when maximum gloss and depth are required.

These compounds allow achieving results that meet the highest detailing standards.

Choosing the right polishing pad.

High-quality polishing pads are just as important as compounds. There are harder and softer foam pads, coarse and fine wool pads, as well as microfiber pads. A coarse compound requires a firm foam pad or a coarse wool pad for fast and effective defect removal, while a finishing compound requires a soft foam or fine wool pad to achieve a flawless result without micro-defects.

Surface protection.

After polishing, the surface should be wiped with a microfiber cloth and a dedicated surface cleaner – for example, RUPES Reveal Light – to remove compound residues and evaluate the final result. This is followed by protection – wax or another durable coating (such as Cartec Ceramic Guard), which protects the restored surface from environmental impact.
